Responsibilities

The Senior Tax Accountant provides senior level support to tax department functions including, but not limited to, the review of Canadian and US indirect tax returns, tax account reconciliations, indirect tax registrations, tax notice responses, coordination of tax examinations and evaluation of process improvements.

  • Review indirect tax returns including U.S. sales & use and Canada GST/HST/PST/QST reports and returns. *
  • Review tax account reconciliations and journal entries. *
  • Assist with sales and use tax audit coordination including addressing audit requests, communicating with outside consultants, and implementing and monitoring procedures post-audit to reduce future exposure. *
  • Examine and evaluate current reporting processes and identify potential improvements and efficiencies. *
  • Collaborate with internal departments including IT, Purchasing and AP on ongoing system modifications and evaluate the impact on sales, use and VAT reporting. *
  • Evaluate the impact of the Company’s new initiatives on sales, use and VAT tax reporting. *
  • Monitor changes in tax law and the impact on sales, use and VAT reporting and current processes. *
  • Identify and monitor tax saving opportunities such as utility refund claims. *
  • Coordinate and monitor tax registrations, permits and exemption forms. *
  • Evaluate Point of Sale systems and their integration into reporting processes. *
  • Provide support and training to Tax Department staff, communities, and other departments within the Company.
  • Resolve and respond to notices and assessments received from tax authorities
  • Perform other assigned duties.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or a Bachelor’s Degree with an emphasis in Accounting.

     

  • Three to five years of accounting, sales & use and/or VAT tax experience in industry or public accounting is preferred. 

     

  • Experience with analyzing data and responding to audit inquiries.

     

  • Strong accounting, analytical and communication skills, along with tax research abilities.

     

  • Strong attention to detail, planning, decision making, problem solving, issue resolution, organization, and prioritization.

     

  • Proficient in utilizing computer technology in the performance of tax department assignments.  Strong computer skills including the use of Microsoft Excel and the Microsoft Office Suite, tax compliance software and tax research software.

  • Must have or be willing to get a COVID-19 vaccine, subject to legal requirements.
