At Atria, uncommon hospitality is what sets truly exceptional senior living apart. It’s more than a warm welcome – it’s the extra call, the thoughtful gesture, the human connection that makes residents and their families feel deeply cared for. This commitment shows up in everyday moments our team members create – and shines through in standout stories like Sarah Murphy’s.
Sarah, Community Sales Manager at Holiday Illahee Hills, was recently honored with Atria’s Uncommon Hospitality distinction – a recognition reserved for employees who bring extraordinary care and compassion to their roles. Her story is one of deep empathy, tireless communication and a genuine commitment to helping others thrive.
A daughter’s call for help
It started with a call from a daughter in distress. Her mother, a retired schoolteacher, had been living alone and growing increasingly lonely after leaving her lifelong career in November 2024. As winter set in, isolation began to take its toll. The daughter reached out to Holiday Illahee Hills, worried about her mother’s well-being.
“She told me her mom was always a very social creature, and she was deeply worried about how quiet and empty things had become,” Sarah shared.
A personal connection
That call turned into a lifeline. After touring Holiday Illahee Hills and falling in love with one of the apartments, things took an unexpected turn: Mom had a serious fall and then suffered a minor stroke, ending up in the hospital.
Through it all, Sarah stayed connected with the family, calling daily to check in and offer support as doctors continued their evaluations.
On one particularly snowy day when the daughter couldn’t reach the hospital, Sarah stepped in.
“I had already planned to bring her mom a plant to brighten up the hospital room,” Sarah said. “So I made the trip and spent time just chatting with her. We talked about her life, her home country of Latvia and the summer reunions she still enjoys with her sorority sisters on Lake Michigan.”
A swift and warm welcome
Those moments mattered. When Mom completed her rehab, the family returned to Holiday Illahee Hills the very next day to finalize her move. The transition was smooth and swift – she moved in that same week. The Atria team, including a Resident Ambassador, made her feel right at home from day one.
Why great people create great communities
From daily phone calls to delivering flowers on snowy days, Sarah’s kindness reflects a larger truth: Great people make great communities. And that’s what Atria is all about.
“Getting to know our residents on a personal level – hearing their stories, their history – it’s what makes this more than a job,” said Sarah. “We’re helping people feel like they’re home again.”
At Atria, it’s not just about amenities or floor plans. It’s about the people who work here, and how they show up every single day with heart.
