When Ian Steinmetz first walked through our doors at Holiday Redbud Hills in Bloomington, Indiana, he was simply looking for a part-time job. What he found was something much more valuable: a sense of purpose, meaningful relationships and a promising career path.
Now a recent high school graduate, Ian has become one of the most beloved team members, earning recognition not just from his manager but from residents who ask daily, “Is Ian working tonight?”
From basketball courts to service excellence
Ian’s path to senior living took an unexpected turn during high school. While his initial dreams centered around playing basketball, he eventually found himself in a team manager role that opened his eyes to something powerful: the impact of behind-the-scenes service.
“It taught me that service is not only about offering my help; it’s about putting the needs of others above my own.”
That early lesson in service would become invaluable when a friend invited him to join the team at Redbud Hills.
Building real connections
Ian’s daily responsibilities include preparing coffee and tea, setting up dining areas, taking meal orders and bussing tables. But it’s the relationships he’s built that give his work a true sense of purpose.
“There was a resident who had trouble remembering things,” Ian shares, his voice softening.
“Every time I would come in, I’d ask her what my name was, and she would remember it after a few minutes. It made me feel like I had a place where I belonged.”
Going above and beyond
Ian’s commitment extends far beyond his scheduled shifts. Mary Blades, General Manager at Redbud Hills, has witnessed Ian’s dedication firsthand. “I’ve seen him out shoveling ice around residents’ vehicles and getting snow off their windshields. He jumps in to help even when he’s not asked to.”
Recognition and growth
Ian’s exceptional service hasn’t gone unnoticed. Mary is preparing to give him a well-deserved raise, and she’s outlined advancement opportunities.
“I hope Ian stays with us. We could promote him to the next step soon,” Mary explains. “I encourage all the junior servers to get involved in different aspects of our community to put them on the path to a great career with us.”
Many Holiday team members across the country started as waitstaff like Ian and advanced to leadership roles including Hospitality Manager and General Manager. With Ian planning to attend Indiana University while continuing at Holiday Redbud Hills, his story shows how senior living careers provide stability alongside other life goals.
What makes someone special in senior living
When asked what qualities make someone successful in senior living, both Ian and Mary emphasize the special characteristics we look for.
H3 Ian’s perspective: “Patience is key. As well as efficiency. Getting the job done and doing it right. Doing it kindly, taking care of the residents, building relationships.”
H3 Mary’s insight: “Definitely caring. The work teaches staff about respect and thoughtfulness.”
A message to his peers
Ian’s recommendation to other young adults considering senior living careers is heartfelt, as he reflects on Redbud Hills, “It’s a really loving community. A great workplace with good teammates and good leadership.”
His enthusiasm is contagious – Ian has already referred several other teammates to join the Redbud Hills team.
